Does the smell of leather make you weak in the knees? Does a well designed leather bag make your heart flutter? Does making your own leathergoods make you stand a little taller? A workshop at Cicada Leather Company is the place for you!
The workshops are designed so that you leave with skills and knowledge you need to continue working with leather. The workshops are hands-on and use only traditional leathersmith hand tools (no machines!). The Introduction to Leatherwork is a prerequisite to all other courses as it covers fundamental skills and knowledge about leather, cutting, dyeing, hand stitching, edging, and treating.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or if the course you want to join is sold out.
Who should Take a workshop at Cicada Leather Company?
Everyone! Some people come because they want to become leathersmiths. Some take the class to learn a new hobby. Some people take the class to make a present for someone. Others bring their significant other along for a fun birthday/anniversary gift. The workshops are designed for adults (since we use sharp, sharp tools).
Do I Need Experience with Leather?
Don't know what to do with a French Edge Skiver. No problem! The Intro to Leatherwork class is for people with no or little experience with leather. Having used a ruler before helps, but even that isn't necessary!
Some classes are for intermediate and advanced students. Those classes are clearly marked as such. Students who take those classes must have already taken Intro to Leatherwork.
Who Teaches this Class?
Mia Barrett has been working with leather for more than a decade. For the last 5 years she has owned Cicada Leather Company, creating durable and beautiful leathergoods as well as teaching others the wonder of leathersmithing. Mia has her Master's in Education and gets great joy out of seeing others create their own leathergoods.
What Do I Bring?
We work with dyes and sharp tools. Its best if don't wear your favorite heirloom totally-unique outfit. Wear something you wouldn't mind ruining and closed-toe shoes, just in case. You don't need anything else because the use of tools and materials are included.
Where is the workshop?
Cicada Leather Company is located in West Philly at 4919 Pentridge St. The studio is inside The Cedar Works Building. There are two parking spots in front of the building as well as ample free street parking. You can also take public transportation using the 34 Trolley or the 64 bus.
Do you do private parties or classes?
Yup! If you have a group of friends that want to learn leather together, email email@example.com and let's talk!
The Cicada Leather Company studio is located in The Cedar Works Building which is wheelchair accessible. The classes are usually held at counter-height workbenches. If that presents an issue for you, I will rearrange my benches to provide a table-height workbench. Please email me for this accommodation.
What If I Can't Afford this Class?
I get it. Money can hinder us from learning what we want and that stinks. So here are your options. Follow me on Instagram and you'll occasionally see an offer for a discounted (often last minute) class. I am also open to trades. If you have a skill or product that you think I may be interested in, let's talk. The final way to get a discount is to be a Mariposa Food Co-Op member. Menders get 15% off all workshops.
